Canada Cup Series – BMX

2017 Canada Cup BMX Specific Rules

In its fifth year of operations, the BMX Canada Cup Series will offer a lineup of 7 races to the young and fast BMXers of Canada.

The series will kick off in May, and will travel to British Columbia, Ontario, and Alberta to finish in Calgary, AB where the new Canada Cup overall Champions will be crowned.

The Canada Cup was introduced in 2012 as a way to help bridge provincial competitions to the international stage, and since has been an efficient tool in providing national competition to young riders, which is propelling Canada to some of its best international results since BMX became an Olympic discipline in 2008.

“The 2017 Canada Cup series will offer some great opportunities for young aspiring BMXers to compete against some of Canada’s best,” said Josh Peacock, the series coordinator for Cycling Canada. “The growth of the BMX Canada Cup series has been impressive over the last four years, and we are counting on more young BMXers to join the series this year. With new world-class facilities in place such as the Toronto Pan Am BMX track, athletes young and old will have access to the highest level of competition across the spectrum.”

Action BMX will host the opening weekend of racing for the series with a UCI C1 sanctioned Canada Cup on Saturday May 27th and a National Calendar Canada Cup event on Sunday May 28th. The venue in Surrey BC, new to the Canada Cup circuit, is one of British Columbia’s most exciting and fast paced tracks, which should provide excellent racing and spectating for all ages.

Toronto, ON, will host the second round of Canada Cup competition at the Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre – site of the 2015 Pan Am Games BMX event where Canada’s Tory Nyhaug claimed gold. The Toronto BMX track features the country’s second ever Supercross start-ramp and is proving to be a valuable legacy for local and National athletes alike. This event will serve as the track’s third official Canada Cup competition weekend, and promises athletes and spectators alike a thrilling weekend of racing.

Top riders will then move to St. Albert, AB, host of the 2013 Canadian National BMX Championships, for stops number 5 & 6 on the Canada Cup circuit. The races, organized by St. Albert BMX, will take place on one of the province’s most challenging tracks in the heart of Alberta’s capital region . Expect some of the nation’s top riders in attendance with the event occurring just one week ahead of the 2017 Canadian BMX Championships, just down the road in Calgary.

The Canada Cup Series will make its final stop in Calgary, AB on August 27th as the final event of the Canada Cup calendar & 2017 Canadian BMX Championships weekend. The Calgary BMX Club will play host to the 2017 Canadian BMX Championships, and will be the site where the country’s 2017 Canada Cup athletes are crowned for the overall series title. Calgary is no stranger to hosting National-level BMX events, and all eyes will be on the track as the nation’s best riders come to town for an exciting weekend of racing.

BC’s James Palmer and Alberta’s Daina Tuchscherer claimed the BMX Canada Cup Series Elite titles in 2016, while BC’s Alex Tougas  and Alberta’s Cayleigh Van Staalduinen took the top honours for the Junior categories. All eyes will be on Alberta’s Aidan Webber and Avriana Hebert, 2016 Junior Devo series champs, as they make the jump into the Junior ranks for 2017.
